Laptop Power Troubleshooting

Posted by

Is your laptop or tablet not powering up? There are many possible causes, including:

(1) Defective AC Power Supply (charger)

(2) Defective main system battery

(3) Broken power jack port inside laptop

(4) Bad motherboard, or other internal component

First, check your power supply (charger) using the following steps:

Step 1: Check wall outlet to ensure it's working.

Step 2: Ensure power cord from wall is securely plugged into the ac adapter (black box between wall and computer)

Step 3: Ensure power cord tip is properly inserted into the laptop and check for power light

Step 4: If no power light on computer, continue to step 5

Step 5: Check power cord output using voltmeter.  Watch this video for instructions:

If the AC power adapter (charger) fails the test, then order a new ac adapter by clicking here.

If the AC power supply checks out, then the next step is to test the battery.

Step 1: Remove system battery from the laptop. Normally this is an easy procedure with the battery being easily accessible from bottom of laptop. However, on some newer, slimmer laptop models, the battery can be inside which requires removing an access cover.  If you are unsure how to remove the battery, search the internet for specific instructions for your model.

Step 2: Attach power supply and try to power on the computer while battery is not installed.  The computer should start up with just the power adapter.

Step 3: If the computer starts with power supply only, the problem is most likely a defective battery.  You can order a replacement by clicking here.

If the troubleshooting steps above do not solve the problem, most likely there's a component level failure inside the laptop itself. In this case, you may consider taking the laptop to a local computer repair shop.

Hope this helps!
